Widescreen : How do I avoid stretching ?

I have windows xp sp3 pro . On my 19" widescreen LCD the display
stretches to maintain the aspect ratio of 3:4 . How do I configure
my desktop to display 16:9 type resolution. It is fine with windows
vista .
