Wich is the better OS for games: XP or 98SE ??? I mean for performances !!!!
where the games will be faster ?

It depends on 1. the computer you plan on using, and 2. the particular games
you want to play. On the latest hardware with specs well above the
requirements of the games you want to run, and with all the latest drivers
and updates, and playing games that actually run on XP, XP generally has a
marginal performance edge. On that same system, however, 98SE will run those
same games just fine, and many older games that XP won't. On an older or
more modest new system, (like PIII from a yard sale or the $199 Walmart
special, which both run quite respectably with any OS but XP) 98SE will have
the advantage.

Depends. What are your system specs?

The games should run "the same" on a decent system. If you're low (128 Mb or
less - I may actually go so far as saying 256 Mb or less) on RAM, 98SE takes
less of it.

OTOH, in *my* experience (stressing "my" there) XP has been much more stable
and dependable. (Diablo II, for instance, used to bluescreen my system, even
on a fresh 98 install, about 1/2- 1/3 of the time. It never has in XP, even
on the same system. Why, we've never found out.)

In 98SE's favor:
- Older games (esp. DOS games) may give you fewer problems
- you don't have to worry about if you're in an administrator or limited
account, or worry about permissions, or an old installer complaining you're
in NT.

Best answer: "What games are you trying to play, and what are your system
specs?" Otherwise it's like someone walking up to you and asking "What motor
vehicle is best" just out of the blue.

Hi both,

Thanks for your answer.
Depends. What are your system specs?

Intel PIV 2.0Ghz on a P4S533, 256MB ram PC2700 (planning to have 512, if XP
really use them), Geforce3 TI8200.

Mainly playing last games: Combat flight simulator 3, flight simulator 2002
pro, hot pursuit 2, colin 3...only games taking the maximum of the
machine....

I've also tried DTM Race driver, but even at less resolution, when having 2
cars in front of me, I've 0.5 seconds between images...so I'm a little bit
surprised !!! otherwise it runs smothly !!!

So, with my system, wich is best: XP or 98 ????

I personally recommend (and use) 98SE. Both will do the job quite well. 98SE
gets a bad rap here in the group. With a little care and maintenance, it can
be a rock-solid OS and it's definitely compatible with the most games. In my
opinion, it's the easiest to use, best all around OS Microsoft ever wrote -
the last good one before they went completely over to the dark side 8^). XP
is great but it sometimes comes up a little short in the game department,
especially regarding compatibility with older games. If that's no problem,
your system is more than enough to use XP and it should do quite well with
newer games such as you mentioned, although graphics glitches like you have
with DTM seem to be a common problem. I would go with at least 512MB ram
because XP will use as much as you'll give it. I can't speak for the others
here, so I'll let *them* tell you they recommend XP.

Win98SE doesn't get a bad rap here, Lin. It is your insistence that
Microsoft has done something dirty to people because they came out with
Windows XP. Not so, and I've recommended early and often in this newsgroup
that if Win95-Millennium work for you, there isn't a compelling reason to
move to XP.

Win98SE was my favorite OS, before XP came along, and if I had no reason to
move to XP I certainly would not have done so. I didn't like Millennium at
all, and have said so. Just wait until whatever Longhorn is called comes
out, since it is going to be different than XP. I imagine you'll have some
new bashing to do on that operating system, too.

Yeah, XP will "really" use the extra memory, believe me. Buy it ASAP...
it's also (IIRC) the limit on what you can use with 98 effectively.

Example - I play a good bit of Diablo II. It would take about 30 sec or so
from the time I exited the game 'til I could use the system again. I heard
the hard drive going like mad, so I knew it was swapping things in and out
of memory. 512 Mb? Closes and ready to go immediately. Overall performance
and such are much improved as well.

Eh, not familiar with most of them. If you head to Google Groups
(http://groups.google.com) and search this newsgroup, you'll probably find a
list of games that give folks trouble - Lin's biggest beef, it seemed, were
Tex Murphy games for a while. Games that needed DOS in one way or another.
I've got one or two DOS games XP won't play, as well, but I played them so
infrequently it didn't really bother me.

If you're playing very recent games, they should both do well.

*Personal* experience gives XP the edge, for me. It's just generally more
stable for everyday use, and handles the games pretty well - though it has
some interface quirks I find annoying (quit hiding things from me!)

FWIW, here's the sort of thing I've been playing of late:
Diablo 1 and 2/Expansion, Myth I and II, Warcraft III, Mechwarrior IV,
European Air War, IL-2 Sturmovik, NHL 2002, Missionforce:Cyberstorm, Red
Alert 1 and 2. If I could find my Syndicate disks, they'd be on, too (old
DOS game.)
