Why wouldn't Windows XP have a default driver for the HP OJd145 printer?

Why wouldn't Windows XP have a default driver for the HP OJd145 printer?

In a previous post, I explained why I did not want to install the huge
array of Hewlett Packard (all useless) software that is forced upon me when
all I want to do is enable the HP OfficeJet D145 printer to print on my
Windows XP Service Pack 2 portable computer.

HP explicitly instructs users to install the software BEFORE hooking up the
USB printer (presumably to prevent us from installing the default Windows
XP drivers).

When I did try to install the default Windows XP drivers for the HP D145,
Windows failed to find the drivers, asking for the manufacturers' CDROM
instead.

I ended up installing scores of megabytes of useless HP software just so
that I could print a file to the printer via the USB port. I really wished
I could just install the single printer driver needed to print to the
printer from WinXP SP2.

Do you know how to install just the default Windows driver for the HP OJ
D145 all-in-one printer?

Only if you can get a download driver update from HP.
More and more mfrs have install CD's that do not permit you to just install
the printer driver. You might check your CD's to see if this is really the
case.
There can be ways other than the default install process. You might also
try emailing HP support.

It is possible that windows will install just the drivers from the HP CD.
Then again, this method is not on the recommended list.

There is NO Windows default driver for OJ D145....

A quick perusal of HP's home pages found this (watch the wrap):
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=64992&lang=en&softwareitem=oj-11520-2

"The corporate driver software for the HP Officejet d Series All-In-One
printers consists of a print and TWAIN"/WIA scan driver for local
connections, and a print and web scan driver for network connections. This
software is primarily intended for corporate customers, and does NOT provide
full functionality. The software solution provided here contains Print and
Scan drivers only. All other functions of the Officejet d Series product
will need to be performed from the front panel when this software solution
is in use. "

Because HP declined to provide one for testing, certification, and
inclusion. (Microsoft doesn't make device drivers for other companies'
products; they do accept other companies' drivers for inclusion on the
installation CD, if those companies pay for testing, etc.)

Just a guess, you're blonde.

Hi Jim Macklin,
I don't think I said it was Microsoft's fault.
If anything, I would think it would be HP's fault if there wasn't a driver
for the Hewlett Packard OfficeJet D145 all-in-one printer (which appears to
be the case).

Apparently HP didn't provide the driver to Microsoft (preferring us to load
their branded HP software instead).
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=64992&lang=en&softwareitem=oj-11520-2

I do see a helpful hint in this newsgroup that a safe equivalent driver
that Microsoft did receive from HP is to install the DeskJet 855 driver
native in Windows XP so I will try that.

I DID get the latest CDROM from HP (who kindly sent it at my telephoned
request). Alas, the update CDROM is no different than the original HP
installation CDROM in that it insists on installing almost a hundred
megabytes of HP software just to get the printer driver working on my WinXP
computer.

I called HP support today to ask if I could just install the one teeny tiny
driver but the support person in India said there was no way that would
work.

I will try the other suggestions by this wonderful newsgroup, namely
installing just the driver from the "DeskJet 855" as the wonderful Bob
Headrick suggested at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=c00302767&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Maybe this will allow a teeny tiny driver to be installed instead of a
hundred megabytes of HP software just to get a d145 working.

Hi Thomas Wendell,
Oh my. Thank you very much for finding that URL stating what I empirically
found out to be true by trial and error (and by calling HP support).

I did run a search of the google groups and did not find that wonderful URL
you sent so I much appreciate your BETTER search (than mine).

I thank you on behalf of me and all HP users who wish to install a teeny
tiny prniter driver instead of more than a hundred megabytes of HP bloat
just to get our printers working.

Thank you very much for the URL!

Could it be because HP won't give one to Microsoft?
Just so they can force you to install their additional rubbish.

Hi Roy G,
Apparently it is true that HP didn't give the printer driver for the HP OJ
D145 all in one printer to Microsoft to use on the Windows XP platform.

Bruce Chambers said so in his post:
"Microsoft doesn't make device drivers for other companies' products; they
do accept other companies' drivers for inclusion on the installation CD, if
those companies pay for testing, etc."

I will try the alternative printer-driver installation that Bob Headrick
suggested at:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...docname=c00302767&lc=en&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN

Hi Bob Headrick,

I had done searches in the google groups prior to posting so I had seen
many of your helpful posts. They should give you the Nobel prize for
printing!

I will try to install JUST the teeny tiny printer driver for the HP DeskJet

Thank you very much for this most helpful advice.

Hi Bruce Chambers,

Thank for clarifying what I suspected but that which I didn't have enough
experience or knowledge to ascertain for myself. Now I know why HP didn't
provide any default printer driver for the HPOJD145 printer to Microsoft
for inclusion into Windows XP SP2.

Thomas Wendell had concurred with you by providing this URL:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=64992&lang=en&softwareitem=oj-11520-2

Here is the text of that URL above.
I am not sure WHAT this really says.
You guys seem to interpret it better than I.

Am I to interpret this text below as saying:
a) HP did not provide just the HPOJD145 printer driver to Microsoft?
b) HP does not provide just the HP OJ D145 printer driver to users?
c) But corporate users get something different (what do they get)?

Thanks for all your helpful advice,

Release Date: 2003-04-20 Version: 2.00
Description
Overview
The corporate driver software for the HP Officejet d Series All-In-One
printers consists of a print and TWAIN/WIA scan driver for local
connections, and a print and web scan driver for network connections. This
software is primarily intended for corporate customers, and does NOT
provide full functionality. The software solution provided here contains
Print and Scan drivers only. All other functions of the Officejet d Series
product will need to be performed from the front panel when this software
solution is in use. For full functionality (Print/Scan/Copy/Fax) from the
PC, DO NOT install this solution. Instead, install the Officejet d Series
full solution, located at www.officejetsupport.com.

What does the d Series corporate driver consist of?

The HP Officejet d Series corporate driver is a Print/Scan "mini" driver
for customers requiring a "small footprint" driver for Windows NT 4.0,
Windows 2000, and Windows XP platforms. The installation uses a
straightforward "silent" installation process. Typical users of this
software solution include commercial customers performing staging of large
groups of PCs (those wanting only Print and Scan software functionality
from their PCs).

The installation is silent, meaning it has no user interface. Once the
setup program runs and completes, the user simply connects the Officejet d
Series product to the PC using a USB or 1284 Parallel cable (a direct
connection for Windows NT users consists of a 1284 Parallel cable and a
1284 Parallel LIO, sold separately). The product can also be connected
through a network using an HP JetDirect 175x external or 200m LIO print
server. An HP Officejet d Series printer icon will appear in the Printers
folder. Scanning can be performed with any TWAIN 1.8 compliant
application(s), such as Microsoft Office® or Adobe Photoshop®, or WIA
supporting application for Windows XP users.

Do I need this software?

The HP Officejet d Series software is designed for Windows NT 4.0/Windows
2000/Windows XP platforms, and is NOT AN UPGRADE to existing software.

* Do not download this software if you are running Windows 95/98/ME.
* Do not download this software if you want full functionality under
Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP. Instead, install the full
solution from www.officejetsupport.com.
* Do not download this software if you already have a full-functioning
Officejet d Series solution; this is not an upgrade!
* Download this software if you want only Print and Scan functionality
under Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP, without the HP Director
interface.

Minimum System Requirements

* Any Intel Pentium II, Celeron, or compatible processor (Pentium III
or higher recommended)
* 256 MB RAM
* 30 MB available hard disk space
* Additional hard disk space to store scanned images
* SVGA 800 x 600 monitor (24-bit color recommended)
* Available USB port (or 1284 parallel LIO)
* JetDirect 175X external or 200m LIO print server (required for
network printing and Web Scan)
* Internet access (recommended)
* Browser (Internet Explorer 5.0 or higher or Netscape 4.6 or higher
recommended)
* ECP Mode

Operating Systems Supported

* Windows 2000 Professional Service Pack 2 or higher
* Windows XP Home (Service Pack 1 or Higher Recommended)
* Windows XP Professional (Service Pack 1 or Higher Recommended)
* Windows NT 4.0 Service Pack 6a

Installation Procedure:

1. Download the Officejet d Series corporate driver file to your
computer.
2. With the Officejet disconnected, log into an account with
administrator privileges.
3. Double-click the Officejet d Series corporate driver file you
downloaded.
4. Click Next in the Location to Save Files dialog box to save the
driver installation files in the indicated location.
5. Setup will run with no additional dialogs. It is finished when there
is no more hard drive activity and the progress bar disappears from the
screen (typically less than 1 minute).
6. See Readme.html for detailed connection instructions (varies by
operating system).
7. Plug the USB cable into the Officejet d Series. A plug-and-play event
begins; this will install the remaining drivers. A dialog box appears in
the lower-right corner of the screen to provide the status of the
installation process.

the DeskJet 855 driver is an alternative.

Hi Bob Headrick,
I do appreciate your help (I'll consider you my Nobel prize winner for
Printing!).

I read the suggested HP OJ D145 support-page URL:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...7&jumpid=reg_R1002_USEN&dlc=en&product=64992&

And I read the HP corporate download printer driver URL:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...product=64992&lang=en&softwareitem=oj-11520-2

And the suggested alternative printer driver URL:
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/...002_USEN&dlc=en&printable=yes&encodeUrl=true&

May I ask clarifying questions on issues I'm (still) confused about?

QUESTION 1 (about the corporate download):
Did I interpret the data correctly to assume corporate users are allowed to
download a much smaller printer driver (kilobytes rather than hundreds of
megabytes) than the consumer users (for the HP OJ D145)?

QUESTION 2 (about the alternative printer driver):
Did I interpret the table correctly to say that an alternative HP printer
driver for the HP OJ D145 on Windows XP SP2 is the HP Deskjet 855c BUT if I
want to find the printer driver native on Windows XP SP2 (see note 1 in the
suggested URL) I cant' use teh DeskJet 855c. I have to use the HP Deskjet
500c instead???

In summary, my two questions are:
Q1: Should I use the corporate download for a home user to install my HP OJ
D145 printer on WinXP?

Q2: Or should I use the default WinXP SP2 "HP Deskjet 500c" printer driver?
(or, did I interpret the URLs incorrectly in that it seems to me the
recommended HP DeskJet 855c is NOT part of Windows but will work if
downloaded from HP)?

I'm sorry to have these two clarifying questions (I am NOT a printer expert
as you might have already ascertained). I just want to install a default
Windows XP SP2 driver that works for my HP OJ D145 printer.

Thanks in advance for your kind help,
Sharon B. Endicott

Hi Roy G,
I appreciate the support (but I wasn't worried about Jim Macklin's
suggestion I was a dumb blonde).

The great thing about the Internet is that we can be shown for what we
really are in that our native "intelligence" (or not) shows up in our
command of the english language - here for all to see and judge for
themselves.

Thanks so very much for your help & support. Not only will I benefit when I
am able to (with your help) install a small footprint printer driver
suitable for the HP OJ D145 but thousands of others who follow in our
footsteps will also benefit from the knowledge gained from all of you
experts.

I am currently trying to decide whether to attempt ...
a) the corporate download from HP (specifically for the HPOJD145)
b) or the suggested HP download of the Bob-Headrick-suggested alternative
printer (specifically for the HP Deskjet 855c)
c_ or the #1-footnoted WinXP SP2 default printer driver (specifically for
the HP DeskJet 500c).

Thank you for your advice in this matter ...

The 500c and 855c are really old printers. Seems likely either one might
work, but you're not going to get any features present on HP printers built
this century. ;-) I'd try the 145 driver.

Chances are that HP's corporate customers asked HP the same thing you're
asking here. And IMO it's a darn good question, especially given the
near-malware status HP software is earning. Being big customers, HP likely
relented and provided the 150k (whatever) standalone driver on a
hard-to-find link. I work with some folks who are HP's 5th largest customer,
and they get bare drivers when they want them. Unfortunately, the idjuts at
HP force the rest of us to load the malware. I hope you're listening, HP.

Tom Ferguson

I read through the thread and believe all of your questions are already
answered by one or more helpful posters. However, if you will allow, I
would like to add a few remarks, &c.

HP frequently makes more than one driver package available for certain
of its products. One for home users which support all of the functions
of the device and by so-doing, extend the product's convenience-of-use
and usefulness. This software might make certain functions accessible
from the software that otherwise are accessible only from the front
panel controls. The package might also contain extra-value software to
increase the user's enjoyment of the product and on-line documentation.
The other, the business package might provide core support only. E.g.
just the drivers for the printer and scanning functions and no
extra-value package.

One often finds each package listed on HP's Driver pages. The
description for each usually is clear in indicating the target user for
the package: home or office.

It is also notable that HPs multi-function products contain the same
"inner workings"/"guts" as a combination of a separate printer and
scanner from that line-up. Thus, it is usually the case that the printer
driver for a certain model printer is the same as the printer driver
part of the software package for one of their "multi-function" or
"all-in one" scanner/printer/fax devices. Knowing this removes the
surprise from discovering that the driver from printer AANNN will be
usable with multi-function xxyyzzz.

In your case,

http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareList?lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&product=64992&lang=en&os=228

is useful. Notice the item at the top of the driver-listing section is
an approximately 38 MB download; however, the bottom item is, in
comparison, a scant 7.3 MB.

I urge you to follow the page links for each package and read the
details before making your final decision.

So, in conclusion, while I understand why one would consider some of the
home software packages to be 'bloatware', the installers usually provide
a certain flexibility in deciding what parts to install. And do keep in
mind, the cautionary words found in the notes on the web pages to the
effect that if you decide to use either the office package (or an
equivalent printer driver), it is possible that not all functions of a
multi-function device will be supported by the software. If so, access
for some functions will be through the font panel controls only.

Good luck.
