why won't these sites open?

I am having trouble accessing cnn.com, cartoonnetwork.com
and a local TV station that has a website. These are not
secure sites and my browser works for other things.

Running XP ... any suggestions appreciated!

Try clearing the cache...
IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content.) It's often recommended that the TIF
folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)
Clear the History.
Delete any cookies from those sites.
Search for a HOSTS file (no extension- not HOSTS.SAM, not LMHOSTS, may be a
hidden file) If those sites are in the HOSTS file, edit them out and save
the file.

Check C:\Windows\System32\Drivers\etc for a file named HOSTS with no
extension. (Not Hosts.sam)
Make sure Windows is set to show hidden files and folders and is NOT set to
hide extensions for known file types.
If HOSTS exists, rename it to HOSTS.OLD
Reboot an try again.

Or, In a Cmd window, enter
ipconfig /flushdns
then clear your TIF also, and re-boot.

http://cexx.org/lspfix.htm run lspfix.exe, which removes corruption in
layered services provider. Somehow winsock gets modified, possibly by
P2P file sharing or spyware.

How do I check those Windows Settings -- the showing of
hidden files/folders, etc. ??

I did find that hosts file (no ext) in the directory you
specified and will rename it.

Go to your control panel, click on Folder Options. Click on the VIEW tab. A
little way down you'll see a check box under Hidden Files and Folders
Check the box that says Show hidden files and folders
