Why won't grammar checker work in certain documents (Word)?

In certain documents, I can't get the grammar checker to work. If I look
under Tools, Options and go to the Spell and Grammar tab, the Grammar Check
options are greyed out.
 
Perhaps the proofing tools are not installed? Try rerunning setup to install
them (Control Panel | Add/Remove Programs | Change).
