why the profile for DVD 720x480?

Hi there,

I found out papajohn.org is a well-known site where many people downloaded
and used his customized profiles when saving PhotoStory3 movie files.

He has a profile for DVD NTSC (720x480). He mentioned in his blog that Sony
DVD Maker plug-in for Photo Story 3 uses the same resolution. I'm wondering
why is this resolution instead of 640x480 (4:3 ratio)? Does anybody know why?

A quick guess is that 720x480 is closer to a digital HDTV standard than
640x480 (A P/C standard)
