Why the need for a C88+?

It irritates me to no end that I'm probably going to have to wind up
buying another Epson, after all the trouble they've given me, but the
C8x series are the only printers that match what I need to do. While
trying to find a decent price on a C88, I found out that the model has
been discontinued (which I was surprised at, seeing as how it's rather
new) and replaced with the C88+.

1) What, exactly, was so wrong with the C88 that they had to update
the model long before the next series will come out? I can get a C88
on clearance, but if there was some major issue with the printer,
maybe I should just wait for the C88+ to go on sale.

2) Has anyone had any experience with these and auto-reset chips yet?
My biggest concern is that they've done what they did with the
R220/340 and caused the printer to reject auto reset chips, even if
they're for the exact same cartridge numbers. (Please don't answer the
troll, just ignore his replies, so that this post can stay on topic).

Several people have suggested getting a C86, but they go for the same
price (or more), plus shipping, on eBay, so that's not really an
option. I /might/ get a Canon, but for the amount of printing I plan
on doing, I don't want a printer with a head that will have to be
continually replaced. Also, I'd prefer the 4 pigment inks.

Hey again Fenrir,

No idea what the changes are with the plus model but you can bet that
they'll have tweaked the firmware a little to deal with autoreset chips
that they know about.

My advice still stands on getting a refurb'd C86 and to be honest given
that you're not shy about getting your hands dirty I'd look at seeing
what there is that you could refurb yourself.. After all, so long as the
issue is just a service required (waste ink full) or clogged printheads
(not dead ones) you should be able to revive it in a matter of hours
work and (if clogged head) a couple of days patiently waiting.

I'm looking at a job lot of C84/86's that fit the bill but given that
you're in the US it's a bit of a bugger to get one to you from here.

Best of luck anyways...

The problem being that, so far, most of the refurbished C86s on eBay
go for $99 starting bid up to $130 'Buy It Now', and non-refurbished
used C86s go for less, but the shipping costs bring the price up,
while I can get a new C88 from Staples.com for $69.99 with free
shipping.

I'm keeping a look out on a few local lists to see if anyone's giving
away or selling a clogged one.

That certainly would be a plus.
