Hi,
I am using Windows 2000 on my Dell C600 laptop. I installed PeoplePC
ONline software to connect to internet, it worked fine. I power off the
computer.

Today after I power on the computer, Windows can not boot, it goes to
that blue screen saying there are some critical problem.

I then select Advanced boot option by pressing F8 in booting up
Windows, I see several options, one is "safe mode", another is "last
known good configuration". In doing the multiple tests, I select both
options.

In selecting these options, I can boot winodws, and I go to "control
panel" -> "system" un-installing the modem driver. ( I am not sure the
modem driver is the problem, but just did that).

The weird thing is, after some point, when i reboot the computer and
come to "control panel", "system" can not be opened, i tried double
click and right click and select "open". Another thing is, all the
hardware configuration function can not be opened such as "modem
configuration".

Now the computer works in that I can boot it up, I can run some other
application. But I can not run PeoplePC software to connect to
internet, it just says unknow error.

Do you have any clue?

No, not really but always check Event Viewer for error details and Device
Manager for error codes and or non-starting devices.

If you google you will find articles that suggest that this software is
likely to install malaware on your sys, and I believe they are or have been
subject to legal action on this.
I would remove it, then scan your sys with a number of malaware apps, eg MS
Defender, Adaware, SpyBot all free, as well as your installed AV app.
You might also run the system file checker, see win help
