Why some files are listed in blue

It has nothing to do with Office but is a feature of Windows XP
Black is normal, blue is compressed and green is encrypted.

The files that became listed in blue occurs in all types of files- bothe exe
and data files and sort of randomly (here and there) across all folders. And
this occured out of the blue about 2 months ago without my remembering ever
making any changes to folder/file settings under winxp professional.

[Alan Edwards, MS MVP Windows - Internet Explorer] says blue is compressed
and green is encrypted, but i have never deliberately compressed or
encrypted any files. Thanks

You don't have to compress files yourself.
XP will do it for you.
XP automatically compresses files that do not get
used frequently

I normally use START/Explore to look at lsitings of my files. Recently I
notice some of the files (not folders though) are listed in blue, which was
not the case before.

Wondering what i did to file/folder settings that caused this sudden
change.
Can anyone help? TIA

Alan is correct, both in what the colour means and that some files are
compressed by the OS without your asking it to. The system will have been
this way since installation, all that has changed is that the setting in
explorer, folder options, view, "Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in
color" has been ticked.

I'm always surprised at "professionals" who STILL have to be asked "Have you
checked (event viewer / syslog)".
