Is this some type of newsgroup virus or something? Today everybody and their
dog seems to be asking if their version of windows XP is 32-bit or 64-bit.

When I was investigating the worm 32 virus, some of the sites mentioned
different treatment depending on whether or not the system was 32 bit or 64
bit. That may be what is prompting the flood. At least one reference page
(done by an MVP) made it clear that most readers would have 32 bit (perhaps
in anticipation of the angst the choice would create!) but most didn't.

Microsoft has created this confusion. On their sites where users
must select patches/updates they list available patches by using
the data bus width with the O/S Name

.. Most home users haven't a clue about such things.

It would be in Microsoft's best interest to isolate the 64-bit
listings away from the "normal" 32-bit ones. Or at least note in
the selections that 64 bit versions are not geared towards home
users.

Yup. As I just commented in a reply to ANOTHER of these threads.. looks
almost like an astroturfing campaign by AMD, spreading the "buzz" about
64-bit computing, doesn't it?

Nah, couldn't possibly be that.

Nah, if that were the case, Apple would be posting... "64 bits, 0 worms.
G5."

Hmm. Should go talk to Apple.... maybe I can make some money.

If you have to ask if your copy of XP is 32 or 64 bit, it's 32.

Although I have an XP system too, I mainly use the Mac OS X computer.
There are no viruses, worms, trojans, etc. and constant weekly need to
install security updates, etc. After years of using Windows, I bought a
Mac OS X computer because I wanted to use my computer and not constantly
repair or fix it from Microsoft operating system flaws and install extra
software to protect the computer that just slows down the overall
performance. I ran Linux for awhile and its okay. Mac OS X is great
compared to Windows in many aspects. Due to Microsoft's dominate and
monopolistic presence on end users computers, I have to use Windows
every so often as I do work for a software company based on Windows.

Microsoft Windows could be a great operating system, but its too
vulnerable to attacks, flaws, and who wants to waste their time worry
about virus, worm, and trojan infections.

I have lots of customers inquiring about Mac OS X computer due to the
constant Windows problems they experience. Although they get frustrated
due to the software they need to use is only available in Windows, they
try their best to find alternatives.

Anyway, Microsoft does enough silent advertising to Apple that users
simply do not see until a later time.

Hate to bust your Apple bubble but if Apple had sold as many PC's and
OS's that the Intel/and compatible PC makers and Microsoft have, you
would be having the same problems as the same dodo heads who have too
much time on their hands would be creating viruses, worms and what ever
that would create the same problems on the Apple platform. Just a matter
of numbers no fun for a few computers to be screwed up but millions and
millions, they go nuts.

Unlike the Mac platform, where you have a *world* of choice. /eyeroll

Perhaps, but if you're looking for a computer as an "appliance," the Mac's a
lot closer than the PC (less hardware variation to worry about, much less
chance of a screwy driver messing things up, etc.)

People sometimes try to "put down" macs as being "too simple," but the
closest thing to a PC that simple and under control is.. an XBox.
