Why should lorries be spelled with a capital l?

F

Farmer

Windows XP Professional.

What is so special about lorries? Are they better than trucks or vans that
they deserve to be capitalised? What about charabancs? Or pantechnicans?

Which begs the question: Why should Farmer be capitalized?

: Not a Word issue.

Are you saying that Word suggests "Lorries" as a "correction" for "lorries,"
which it has marked as misspelled? Or perhaps that it is being corrected
automatically? Is it at the beginning of a paragraph/sentence?

F

Farmer

Yes it does. No, it is not at the beginning of a sentence. It has been
marked as misspelled every time I use it, regardless of where it falls.

Are you using a US English dictionary to spellcheck, but you're trying
to write UK English? ("lorry" isn't a word used in the US, so maybe
Word thinks it must be a proper name.)

(Note that if you had said it was a spellcheck problem in your first
message, you wouldn't have gotten snippy answers.)

The word is in the main dictionary, so I don't know why it would be marked
wrong in any case, but if it were, and if you happened to add it to the
custom dictionary in an instance when it was capitalized, then Word would
know about "Lorries" but not "lorries." You might check to see whether
"Lorries" is in the custom dictionary. Also check what language is applied
to the text; as long as it's (any flavor of) English, this word should not
be marked as incorrect.

No I never use US spellcheck. I appreciate that it is not a US word - thanks
for that.

I didn't expect snippy answers to a perfectly ordinary question! :)

The custom dictionary containes 'lorries' as I previously hoped this would
cure the problem. It didn't. I only ever work in UK English and it is
immediately apparent if a document comes in that is not, as common words are
marked as mis-spelled.

Thank you.
