Why Outlook 2003 not posting meetings unless email opened first?

Until recently meeting requests from others would block time on my calendar
as tentative pending my action. Now I must first open the emailed meeting
request before the appointment will block time on the calendar. This is
causing issues since time looks to others to be apparently free until I open
the associated emailed meeting request to cause it to post. This is
unaccepatable as conflicts arise in the course of a typical day while I'm in
meetings and cannot open emails, and there are multiple claims on the same
blocks of time. Any insight regarding what the cause could be and how to
fix?

Check your settings for updating free/busy information on the server. With
our upgrade, it went to default at 15 minutes. This was causing essentially
the same issue you are having. We have reset to 5 minutes, and expect to call
this issue resolved today.
