I have a bitmap file saved in my documents. Each time I try to open it using
powerpoint it rejects the file. In another word Powerpoint couldn't open this
file. The file contains photos?

PowerPoint cannot "open" bitmap files. You can however insert a bitmap file into
PowerPoint by using the "Insert Picture from file" and selecting your bitmap
image.

PowerPoint doesn't "open" bitmap files. PowerPoint isn't an image reader. You
can, however, create a presentation and *insert* a JPG or PNG or GIF or TIFF
file as an image on the slide. Does that help?

PowerPoint opens PowerPoint files, not bitmap files.

It sounds like you need to start PowerPoint, create a new presentation to work
with, then use Insert, Picture, From File (from the main menu bar) to add your
pictures to the presentation.
