Why is word creating a new file with same name plus 1,2,3 on 'save

Not using 'save as' feature, just save. Do not use 'autosave' feature, just
use 'save' after a few minutes of typing in word document. This cause the
original file to be saved as the same name with a number added to the name.
Next time I select 'save' it creates another file with same name and the next
highest number:
Example:

test (original file)
test1 (first save button use)
test2 (second save button use)
test2 (third save button use)
