why is there no option to type a "cent sign" on the keyboard?

I'm not even having much luck finding this symbol in the CHARACTER MAP of
most of my fonts. Has this symbol fallen out of fashion? I don't always
want to use "$.0"
Thanks for any input
 
Press CTRL and the "/" key then c.

You can also use ALT+0162 on the numeric keypad.
 
Using your NUMLOCK numbers, press and hold the ALT key and type 0162 and
release.
 
This is one of many "special characters" for which Word has built-in
shortcuts (this one is Ctrl+/, c). See
