change the # character to always display a Pound sign

I have a laptop with an Australoian keyboard. There is no Pound currency
sign. I now live in England and want to change the character produced by
hitting the # key to make it always a Pound symbol. I could do this in Word
2003 but can't find out how to do it in Word 2007

You may be able to do that in Windows, but Word will allow you to
assign a Ctrl-key combination to the pound-sign: Insert Symbol >
scroll a few lines down to the pound-sign, click on it; click the
shortcut key button and type, say, Ctrl-Shift-# or Ctrl-Shift-$ in the
box, and OK out, and that will be your key for the pound-sign in Word.

There is no Australian keyboard programmed into Windows, I would guess you
would have an Australian regional setting with a US pattern keyboard. Such a
keyboard configuration would has the # symbol at Shift+3. To type £ you
need to press Alt+Ctrl+Shift+4. You can however change the regional settings
to indicate to that you have a UK pattern keyboard which will put the £ sign
at Shift+3, and there will be other anomalies too. You might find it less
confusing to change the regional settings to UK English and retain the US
pattern keyboard and type the keyboard shortcut for £.It is also possible to
remap any keys within Windows by means of a registry hack, but this is
outside the scope of this forum. Search at Google if you want to contemplate
that.
