why is there no "boot files" available?

I would like to have "boot files" that I could put on one of my flash
(thumb, key, ect..) drives so that I could boot to it & install or recover
Windows 2K. My copy does not seem to want to boot. =/

Is there any way to set that up?

What does this mean? "My copy does not seem to want to boot" Copy of what?

My OEM version of Windows 2000. It will not boot from ther CDROM. My
WinXP DOES boot from the CDROM.

Why are there no "boot files" available so that I can just boot it from my
USB thumb drive? Floppy drives are obsolete, or would be obsolete if MS
would provide the boot files needed in a nice little package that I could
place on my USB drive.

In order to boot the CD-Rom you may need to change the boot order in cmos
setup. As far as the OEM you may need to ask the OEM provider for
instructions on it's use. In order to boot your "thumb drive" your system
must support it as a boot device.

Your hurdle is BIOS. The motherboard manufacturers have really been dragging
along on this technology. If you have a motherboard BIOS that will allow
"Boot From Removable USB Drive" then you MAY be able create the boot MBR and
get it to work. Otherwise, wait for the technology catch up.

Thanks for the reply. I can manipulate the BIOS to boot from variety of
media. I CAN use one of my XP disks to boot, & CAN use my thumb drive to
boot using WIN98 start-up files. The Win 2000 CD does NOT want to boot
from the CDROM & errors out when using i386/winnt.exe from the DOS prompt
when using the WIN98 startup (with smartdrv running).

What I am wishing for (because I do not think it exists) is a package of
files that do NOT require loading floppys so that I can use my thumb drive
to boot in a format that let's me attempt to load WIN 2000 using the
setup.exe command.

Thanks for the reply. I should have already told you guys that I CAN

does not boot from the CD-ROM. One of my XP disks DOES boot from the
CD-ROM.

What I am waiting for is MS to catch up with technology that is already old
(over a year). This is not rocket science. All I want is a little package
of files that I put on a thumb drive to make it a boot disk. I know I am
not the 1st person to ask for this. I do not know why MS is dragging their
feet on it.

If a WinXP CD will bootup then a Win2K CD should also, unless it's an improperly
made copy. In order to retain the bootup feature from the original disc, a 1:1
copy must be made from a known bootable disc.

If still no joy, you can create a bootable disc. Here's a procedure using Nero
5.5:

The same website has a procedure using Nero 6.

Excellent! That will help immensely! I got Nero 6 =)

I bet after I make the CD I can copy it to a thumb drive & it will work
fine. Thanks.

Thanks Dave,

All better now, I RAM was set to SPD & it is rated to run at 200 (400mgz) &
the CPU on this box is running at 133. By sync'n the RAM with the CPU at
133mgz, it FINALLY loaded. =)

Still dont know why it won't boot from the CDROM!

I doubt that it will work on your USB drive since you can't copy the boot files.
It would give you the same condition that you have with your current CD
copy...no boot files present.
