Why is there a Disk Defragmenter utility included in the OS?

I reformatted the D drive and it is working fine.

I'll never defrag another drive though.

I guess the only thing I can do is move everything off it and re-format
every few months.

I am worried about my C drive. I won't be stupid enough to ever defrag it,
but I don't know about moving the operating system and all the applications
in order to re-format it. Sounds like a pain, but that's PCs I guess.

Any tips from knowledgable users?
Been using computers since 1983. I have never reformatted a hard drive.
I have never had a problem with disk defrag, but I make sure my disks
are no more than 80% full.

Of course in 1983 my computer only had two floppy drives.

I follow the same rule, never wait until the last minute to clear the
drive and cleanup. I keep them regularly defragged, first run CCleaner
and have set Diskeeper and the result has been amazing. I have 120GB
drive that gets fragmented faster than i know and i guess its the
maintenance routine that keeps it doing its best.
