Why is Smartsound Quicktracks a required SpywareBlaster plugin?

What is the "Smartsound Quicktracks plugin" & why does SpywareBlaster
now require it?

Lately, every time I try to update SpywareBlaster 3.4 on Windows XP I
get a very annoying demand to install the "Smartsound Quicktracks"
plugin. The installation of Smartsound Quicktracks fails every time so
I've learned by trial and error to cancel it, then when it asks again,
to cancel it again - and only after those two cancels can I update my
SpywareBlaster database.

Does anyone know why SpywareBlaster is asking for this "Smartsound
Quicktracks" plugin?

What is a "Smartsound Quicktracks" plugin anway?

Is it good or bad for our PC?

Thank you in advance for your advice,
Susan

It doesn't. I have SPyware Blaster 3.4, and it doesn't ask for Smartsound
Quicktracks plugin. Smartsound Quicktracks plugin is for Premiere Pro.

I have the same version and it doesn't happen to me.

Alias

I don't get any demands when I update SWB v3.4. You've got adware.

Solution: Clean out temporary files. Reboot.

In Options, configure CleanUp! in Custom CleanUp! mode to 'Empty
Recycle Bin', 'Scan local drves for temporary files', 'CleanUp! All
Users', and 'Fully Erase Files (Wipe Clean)'.

CleanUp!: http://home.comcast.net/~sgould4567/software/cleanup/

If that fails to work, delete Java applications and applets.

If you have Premier Pro on your machine, as pointed out by CARP, then
it's default configured to check for updates/plugins.

Turning those option(s) off will fix the issue.

It sounds like the Microsoft Installer settings for this "Smartsoud
Quicktracks" is broken. A program installed with the Microsoft Installer
can be "fixed" automatically by it if a missing file or folder is detected.
This usually happens when you first log on, so I couldn't say why it's
interfering with SpywareBlaster, as far as I know it doesn't use Microsoft
Installer.

SQ could have been installed with your computer or is/was part of a
music-related program that you have.

See if the Add/Remove Programs list (in Control Panel) has an entry for SQ
and if so, try removing it.

If it is indeed a Microsoft Installer issue, it should be logging what is
causing it to pop up. Right-click on My Computer, select Manage then
navigate to Event Logs and see if there are any Microsoft(or Windows)
Installer entries in the System and Application logs. If so, post them here.

When I googled prior to posting, I found that many people who use
SpywareBlaster on Windows XP have this exact problem (and many people
don't have it based on the appends prior to this one). So it's common -
but not universal. But nobody seems to have a solution as far as my
googling seems to show. That's why I asked here for advice.

Most of the googling (both web and groups) seems to say Adobe Premier
Pro is trying to pull a fast one somehow and Spyware Blaster is
stopping it (I think that's what they say anyway).

I'm pretty confused but like the many other people with this problem, I
don't even know what Adobe Premier Pro is (I have Adobe Acrobat but not
Adobe Premier Pro). I've asked the Adobe newsgroup what SmartSound
QuickTracks is since it seems to be an Adobe plugin to Spyware Blaster
(if that makes any sense at all).

Trying to faithfully follow your suggestion, I right clicked on My
Computer & selected Manage which opened up the WinXP Computer
Management console. I didn't see anything called "Event Logs" but I did
see "Event Viewer" and "Performance Logs and Alerts".

In the "Event Viewer", there were three selections, "Application",
"Security", & "System". The top two lines of the "Application" section
(after a re-test of updating SpywareBlaster & canceling twice the
request to install the Adobe Premier Pro Quicktracks Plugin) were:
- Information 11/7/2005 9:30:40 AM MsInstaller None 11729 Administrator
SUSAN
- Error 11/7/2005 9:30:39 AM MsInstaller None 11760 Administrator SUSAN
- Warning 11/7/2005 9:26:23 AM MsInstaller None 1001 Administrator
SUSAN

Doubleclicking on the top "Information" line revealed "Product
SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin -- Configuratoin failed. For more
information, see Help and Support Center at
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/events.asp."

Doubleclicking on the middle "Error" line revealed "Product: SmartSound
Quicktracks Plugin -- Error 1706. No valid source could be found for
product SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin. The Windows Installer cannot
continue."

The third "Warning" line revealed "Detection of product
'{4A7FDA4D-blah-blah-blah}' feature 'Quicktracks' failed during
request for component '{22056900-blah-blah-blah}'"

Obviously something called "QuickTracks" wants to install. I asked my
son if he put anything on the computer but he says no (he has his own
computer but he sometimes uses mine).

Do you think he did something maybe by playing a video or something?
How do I tell this "QuickTracks" to just go away?

Thank you ever so much,
Susan

The problem with doing Google searches is that you find misinformation or faux information
as well as the correct information. It is difficult to separate the the correct info vs.
the faux information.

CleanUp!: http://home.comcast.net/~sgould4567/software/cleanup/

I ran CleanUp! which first flushed a loud toilet sound, startling me,
and then proceeded to wipe out all my files in c:\tmp which I was
saving to go through. Yikes! This program is nice but it should pop up
a dialog box saying "You will lose all files and folders that have
"tmp" in the name - Do you want to still proceed?".

When it said it would remove temporary files, I thought that meant
C:\TEMP (which I never use for this reason). I store all my data that I
am working on temporarily in c:\tmp which is gone now. Oh well. It
saved me the hassle of going through to separate the wheat from the
chaff (like all my incoming photos of the grandchildren). I can ask for
them again :)

At the end of CleanUp! before logging out, it said:
.... blah blah blah ...
'Run MRU' list - removed from the registry.
Telnet's MRU list - removed from the registry.
CleanUp! 4.0 recovered 15.1 MB of disk space from 823 files.
CleanUp! finished on 11/07/05 09:56:54.

But the problem of Adobe Premier Pro wanting to launch something when I
update SpywareBlaster seems to remain. I wonder if my kid did something
to my computer!

It's also bundled with Ulead audio products and another program called
Power Director.

How do I tell this "QuickTracks" to just go away?

This might help, if you follow up to the middle of instruction #3:

Just when I think I've heard it all ...

Yes, Far Canal, it is very interesting how some programs have defaults
which are counterintuitive to the operation of others. We learn from
everything we do!

The use of "c:\tmp" to store temporary files is extremely common in the
UNIX world where in the olden days, tmp wasn't cleared upon rebooting
(nowadays on some UNIX systems, tmp is cleared upon rebooting but most
UNIX servers I've used don't reboot more than once a year or so so the
/tmp directory is often used to store data for months). On a PC,
neither C:\TEMP nor c:\tmp are cleaned upon reboot but C:\TEMP gets so
much Microsoft crap stored in it that c:\tmp is the only reliable way
of maintaining your own temporary files directory.

Same with Program Files (I store all my programs in "C:\My Programs".
Likewise with "Documents and Settings" (I store all my important data
in "C:\My Data".

By storing my important programs hierarchically in a very well defined
order in "C:\My Programs", by saving my important data hierarchically
in an organized fashion by task (not company marketing names, which are
useless) in "C:\My Data", and by temporarily storing my working copies
in well organized sub directories of "C:\Tmp", I avoid the common
confusion that occurs because Microsoft and other programs store tons
of crap in a confusing array ridiculously flat "C:\Program Files"
directories, ludicrous marketing terms scattered about the horridly
complex "C:\Documents and Settings" hierarchy, and absolutelly
unintelligable crap in the C:\TEMP directory.

My corresponding directories are clean, well organized, and above all,
simple and intuitive.

Back to the problem at hand. It seems it has morphed to how to really
remove a program from Windows XP when the InstallShield installer fails
to do so.

I just found a listing for "SmartSound Quicktracks Plugin" in the
Start, Settings, Control Panel, Add or Remove Programs console. Maybe
my kid did install something, after all!

Unfortunately, I clicked "Change/Remove" a dozen times and all that
happened each time was a message saying "InstallShield Wizard"
"SmartSound QuickTracks PlugIn SetUp is preparing the Install Shield
Wizard which will guide you though the program setup process. Please
wait". But nothing happened each time and that message goes away.

It's interesting how one computer problem cascades into another and
another until the problem is resolved (honestly, I don't know how you
guys do this stuff). I guess my question has just now morphed into a
question about how to really uninstall a program.

Is there a WinXP program uninstaller out there that will really
uninstall this program?

Thank you in advance,
Susan

BWAHAHA! There's an option in CleanUp! to turn the sound off.

Maybe uninstalling and reinstalling SWB it will correct the problem?

Just to confirm the above. I have Spyware Blaster 3.4, and have never been
asked to download a plugin. I would suggest that you do a clean re-install.

CharlieDontSurf's reply had a link[1] to download the program - you could
try installing it, restarting the PC then attempting the uninstall again.

If that fails he also gave a link[2] to the Microsoft Installer Cleanup
utility that can remove broken installs of this ilk.

I had the same problem a few weeks ago.

Updating SpywareBlaster 3.4 would bring up the Smartsound Quicktracks
installation window.

In my case I traced Smartsound Quicktracks to Ulead's Video Studio 9 that I
have on my system.

Smartsound Quicktracks is an Audio component of Video Studio that allows the
addition of automatically generated background music to your Video.
To be honest I don't at this point have a lot of idea how it works as I've
only recently got VS9, more to the point how the two got crosslinked is even
more of a mystery.

Now unfortunately I can't remember precisely how I 'fixed' it but I vaguely
remember either just persisting with the updates in Spyware Blaster & it
came right or I uninstalled Spyware Blaster & reinstalled after a reboot.

Regards
Paul.
