why is my "disk cleanup" not working?

when i try to clean up some space in my disk, the tool starts but never
finishes, it says scannig compress files or something like that, and stops
there, doesnt pass that and the meter even moves from 2 bars like it gets
frozen, my pc thn works a liltle slow but works(it doesnt froze at all)
please help me out.
steps i do are:
open my computer second button click on c: properties and then disk cleanup.

select all the files, press Delete.
Open the Control Panel Internet Options applet.
Select the General tab, then click Delete Files.
Select the "Delete all offline content" check box, then click OK.
