Why is it so SLOW?!

Why? It is a total fact that vista is the reason his computer is slow... and
you cant do much about it other than formating and installing XP...

what do you want me to do? start telling him tweaks that may give him a 5%
better performance max?

Believe me I have tried tricks and tweaks to make vista faster.. you just
cant make it fast enough ... even disabling services and shell extensions
doesnt help much...

Even on dual core machines its too slow for my taste.

Well the op is running vista and wanted some help. Your post was of no help
at all.
I guess you just like making stupid post to get a reaction.
Typical troll.

turn off indexing, aero, sidebars various other services, make sure nothing
starts that is not needed (autruns)...

in the end he will end up with an OS that is more boring than XP and will
have
all the compatibility problems....

you can call me troll all you want...

that is your opinion..

my opinion is that I told him the culprit right on target from the start.

If he wants perfomace and stability and compatibility there is only one
solution:

XP

Ok, you might not be as much of a smartallek troll as I had originally
assumed, but your post still wasn't helpful. And given all the hype recently
(check the twit.tv and cnet podcasts) about how changing the OS on a computer
can void a warranty, I'd really prefer to keep the original OS on the
machine. I forgot to mention the two XP boxes I have in the house, too :)

Thank you for your appreciation of my rapier wit and dashing good looks...
wait... I have neither... what was I talking about again?

Oh, yeah. I know there's immature people. My view on the OS wars is that
each has its place. As much as everyone LOVES to hate windows, I wish they'd
understand that MS and Lord Gates did very well standardize the computer
industry, making MUCH of the technology we have today possible. Windows is a
very good multi-purpose OS. It's not the BEST at anything, but it's damn well
good enough for most things (and most users, who AREN'T techhies).

Mac OS is good for novice users, multimedia, or people who like really
pretty computers. Some may laugh, but it's true, and there's obviously a
demand for that, or they'd be out of business.

Linux is great for its own reasons. It runs really well on older systems
because of it's small kernel footprint. That makes it ideal for things like
webservers and homework machines or web browsing. There'd be a lot more
computer crap in junkyards if it wasn't for techies taking old windows boxes
and resurecting them (Frankenstein-style) as Linux boxes. Call it recycling...

WOW. That was totally off topic... but it was my topic.. so HA!

Actually I have a couple of old machines (W95 old) but with more RAM yet
Linux refuses to install or installs but runs like crap, yet XP and 2003
server both install faultlessly and run, obviously they don't run fast
but if you limit what you ask of them they run stable.

I found "Defender" caused slow and problematic behavior a couple of
times, disabled okay enabled slow... no idea why but maybe worth a try.

I forgot to mention, look at properties of hard drive, if the box for
"Index this drive" is checked try unchecking it. That helped me a lot
with several machines.

From what I've seen it does nothing useful, maybe for some applications
it does but nothing I use... so the extra time it takes you never get back.

You could check out the performance of your machine using the
Performance Information and Tools program on Vista.

My Dell Vista laptop was working fine untill recently when i
updated some driver meant for the machine. After that my machine was
slow, even after reinstallation of the OS. Still trying to resolve
this issue with Dell.
