why is it not one click away?

why the windows calc (calculator as the originator of computers) application
is among other less-used accessories?

I've asked the same question to a turkish newsgroup (news.newsturkiye.com)
and they adviced me to click win+r and type calc, and then I tore my MSCE
certificate...

Wha? I am unsure I understand your question.

By default - things may not be 'where __you__ would want them' - but you can
make a shortcut anywhere you want and even make your own shortcut keys to go
along with said shortcuts.

You expect all legacy applications to be just one click away in the
default install of Windows? Wouldn't that require a rather huge
monitor to see them all? Wouldn't that also mean having to roam your
eyeballs over that large screen trying to scan all the icons trying to
figure out which one to click on?

So why not make it so? Go ahead, add a shortcut to the QuickLaunch
toolbar in the Windows taskbar and, voila, it is just one click away.
If you want to customize your desktop, just do it.

Alternatively, you could get a keyboard that lets you program some
special-use buttons. Mine already came with a Calculator button but I
can still define it to do something else or configure one of the other
buttons to run calc.exe. Keyboards with programmable buttons have
been around for over a decade, maybe even 2 decades.

Then are are keyboard macro utilities, like AutoHotkey, that let you
define a shortcut key combo to run a program.

You have LOTS of choices. Pick one.

I forgot in my other reply about the Windows-defined shortcut keys
that a user can define. So if the user wants a shortcut key, they
don't necessarily need something like AutoHotkeys (which runs macros,
too).

Then buy a calculator. They're really cheap. A hell of a lot cheaper
than buying a computer to use as a calculator.

ok, thanks
then I shall go and buy a tv, mp3 player, console, notepad, agenda, etc

Calculating numbers is only one of many things that a computer can do.
Others have suggested how easy it is to set up a one-click shortcut
and/or keystroke combination to bring up the calculator.

FWIW, I have a $5 calculator sitting on my desk that I use much more
often than the Windows calculator.

peepee_511 apparently doesn't know how to do that and so he's blaming
his stupidity on Microsoft.

<snipped>
this is my quicklaunch bar
<snipped>

*Your* quicklaunch bar can have whatever *you* want it to have in it.
That's why it is - as you have pointed out - yours.

Create a shortcut to the calculator application and put it in your
quicklaunch bar. You can have a desktop shortcut (or several) and/or start
menu shortcuts - pretty much - where ever you want them. You can have
hotkeys assigned to shortcuts in Windows as well.

In other words - as I previously responded ...

By default - things may not be 'where __you__ would want them' - but you can
make a shortcut anywhere you want and even make your own shortcut keys to go
along with said shortcuts.

study some computer history

I'm 64 freakin' years old peepee, and I've been living "computer
history" since my 8mhz "turbo XT" dual-floppie computer that had 768K
of RAM and a mono monitor, no hard drive, no modem and a dot-matrix
printer.

I don't think a computer was create with a calculator in mind.
I think the creators did have something grander than a 10$ calculator in
mind. Granted it was a nice tool to add, but I think running programs
of different nature was the basic idea. Even basic on a vic was
nothing more than a "run program" platform.

WOW! That was a powerhouse! I started with a computer that used cassette
tapes and only had 9 kilobytes of RAM (and only admitted to having eight).

Maybe I need to experiment with some search terms, but what WOULD be
nice would be a calculator application with a scrolling adding machine
style "tape" that could be dumped to a multiple column 8 1/2 X 11 hard
copy printout.

My first one was an HP67 (256 bytes of memory) and a magnetic card drive.

Oh, so now you admit that a computer is not just a calculator nor is its
primary purpose to be one.

Sorry for the late response. We had problem in accessing the net for
several days, telco said it was caused by a cable rupture :-(

Create a shortcut in the Quick Launch bar and it is just one click
away, the way you want it.
