Why is email downloaded twice for IMAP account?

I have setup a Gmail account and enabled the IMAP interface. I added the new
account to my Outlook 2007. Outlook created a new PST file as expected. It
had a Gmail folder that contains the various sub-folders (All Mail, Drafts,
Sent Mail, Spam, Starred, & Trash) that are part of the Gmail account on the
server. There is also a Inbox folder that is separate from the Gmail
subfolders. It also ceated several additonal folders: Drafts, Junk E-mail,
and Sent Items.

When my Gmail account receives email, the new email is downloaded to the
Inbox folder, but it is also in the All Mail subfolder. If I happen to click
the item in the All mail subfolder, it download loads the item again and
while that download is occuring my Outlook session is hung. With IMAP I
thought one was suppose to be able to download headers only and choose what
part of a email to download (like download the body, but not the attachments,
etc.)

Thanks,
Don Williams

gmail adds its own kinks. Most IMAP servers don't have an "All Mail"
folder. It's something you'll need to live with, as far as I can tell.

How do you tell Outlook what and when to download items into the Inbox
folder? In reading about the generic IMAP protocol, it said that you should
be able to choose headers only, or headers plus the body and select which
attachments. Of course, it said that depends on the client. Since Outlook
tends to be full featured client, I hoped it have those features. The Outlook
help is not very clear about what is and is not supported in the IMAP
protocol.

That's possible. Configure that in your Send/Receive group. If you decide
to download headers only, Outlook's Junk E-mail filter won't work on that
account.

Yes, I saw and tried that. However, it downloads the entire item regardless
of the my choice. I selected the "Use the custom behavior defined below"
choice. Then I selected the Inbox and Junk E-mail folders, then I selected
the "Download headers only" choice. Then I click OK. I tried it, but it
downloaded everything. I went back in, the selection has been changed to
"Download complete item including attachments" and it is grayed out. If I
uncheck and recheck one of the folders, it will ungrayed and switch back to
"Download headers only".

Outlook help is and has always been incomplete. It seems to never tell you
ALL of the conditions that have to be met. I would like the Outlook help to
be complete. Yes, I real mean complete. Just about every page would need an
advanced user selection, but it is too slow to post questions on a board and
waits hours to days for a response. Sometimes you never get a response.

Thanks, Don Williams

Does it make a difference if you're subscribed to the folder or not?

I'll agree with you on this.

Currently, I'm subscribed to every folder. I would expect if I unsubscribed
from a folder that I would not get anything, no headers, no nothing for that
folder. I do want to get headers, then choose to down load an item (of
course, I had originially hoped that I could choose which parts of an item).

I will be tonight before I can try unsubscribing, etc.

Yes, unsubscribing did make a difference. I assume subscribe is the default.
Also changing to offline mode made a difference too.

Thanks for the suggestion.
