I just upgraded our computer with XP and am now
experiencing difficulty accessing the network -- even to
activate. I am writing this from a different computer
because we cannot access web now. We are connected via
cable with a box that permits up to four computers (the
others communicate with the internet fine. There are no
loose plugs. Any suggestions? Thank you

Need more info.

Is your NIC showing up properly in device manager? Did you try getting the
latest NIC driver from the hw manufacturer & installing it in device
manager?
Are you using DHCP on your network?
If you run ipconfig /all from a command prompt, what IP address do you see?
If it begins with 169.xxx.xxx.xxx it means your NIC couldn't get an IP
address from the DHCP server...
Can you ping your default gateway?

Open up the System icon in the Control Panel, click on the Hardware tab,
then the Device Manager button. What does Device Manager tell you about
your network adapter? Does it have drivers installed and working correctly?
