Why have my Outlook rules disappeared?

I have been running Outlook using multiple POP e-mail accounts forever. I
had a bunch of Rules to route incoming messages to folders. Everything worked
well.

I added an Exchange account to my Outlook setup and connected to the
Exchange server. The first time I connected to my POP accounts after having
added and accessed the Exchange account, I noticed my rules were not working.
Accessed Tools/Rules and Alerts - no rules.

My theory - Exchange stores rules on the server and when I hooked up the
Exchange account for the first time, my rules went to where ever Exchange
stores them and I will never be able to get them back.

I am running Outlook 2003 version 11.0, build 8002. I canot tell you much
of anything about the Exchange setup - it is a client's and I have neither
access nore support.

Appreciate any help on 1) getting back my rules 2) if I cannot get back my
rules - how I can avoid this happening again if I have to add another
Exchange account later
