Why dont Win2000 show the filename extension?

Why dont Win2000 show the FULL filename extension?

For example, lets say a file is called dodo.exe. In the files it is
shown as dodo (extension not seen). Yes, the icon is supposed to show
it as an application, and if I use the VIEW - DETAILS, it will come up
as "application", but all of that is just a big run-around. I just
want the FULL filename WITH EXTENSION.

This becomes even more of a hassle when I try to rename a file. For
example I was trying to rename agent.ini to agent.backup, and rename
agent.bak to agent.ini (I wanted to toggle my agent backup to the
using .ini file because I screwed up some settings). I ended up with
a file called agent.backup.ini

I finally had to reboot and load Windows98 (dual booted) to straighten
out this mess. Win98 never did this. I dont want Win2000 to do it
either. How can I change this so the FULL filename is shown?

Thanks

Hello (e-mail address removed),

In windows explorer go to Tools, Folder options, View and uncheck "Hide file
extensions for known file types"

Best regards

If you're using the native GUI filemanager, then:

Tools -> Folder Options -> View (tab)
uncheck "Hide file extensions for known file types"

and "Apply".

If you want the same settings for all views (not just the current folder)
then click the "Like current folder" button at the top.
