Why doesn't my highlighted word delete when I type a new word?

Recently, when I highlight a word and then type a new word, the highlighted
word doesn't delete, but remains with the new word. Any ideas how this
started and how I can fix this? Clicking on the overtype button doesn't seem
to help.
 
In Word, click on Tools | Options | Edit | check the "Typing
replaces selection" box | OK.
