Why doesn't client have a deleted items folder?

I am working with a user who has Outlook 2002. They have an IMAP e-mail
account. In Outlook, rather than having a deleted items folder, they have a
Trash folder. When I go into views, they have an option for IMAP messages
and Hide Messages Marked for Deletion. Rather than moving the messages into
a Deleted Items or Trash folder, they show up in the mailbox box with a slash
through them.
Is this a function of IMAP? Is there a way it can be set up so deleted
items move to the Trash (or Deleted Items) folder and get deleted from there?
If not, how do these items get deleted from the Inbox?

IMAP with Outlook doesn't have a Deleted Items or Trash folder because
deleting in an IMAP account doesn't work that way. If the person sees a
Trash folder, it's because the server presents one, but it's no different
than any other folder, as far as Outlook is concerned. With IMAP,
"deleteing" a message simply marks it for deletion (signified by an
overstrike through the message's summary line in the Inbox listing), but
leaves it in the folder where it is located. You then must used Edit>Purge
Deleted Messages to actually remove it from the folder. The "Deleted Items"
and "Trash" folders don't enter the picture at all.
