Why does XP update stall on install?

Hello,

I'm having cd drive issues so I thought it would be a
good idea to update XP as part of troubleshooting.

That being said, I download all the updates and then it
refuses to install.

I've rebooted several times and been patient but it just
won't start the install.

I remember it did this a while back when a virus was out
and everybody was trying to update at the same time.

I have all my other programs (firewall, virus, etc.)
turned off.

Does anyone know why this is happening?

Hi Stan,

What CD drive issues are you having?

Locate the WindowsUpdate.log file under \Windows or \Winnt. Open it and
scroll to the bottom. Look at the error codes and compare them against this
site or post back here with them:

Rick,

Thanks for your help. I am having trouble accessing my
cd rom drive due to an I/O device error. I can play
music cd's but can't read data cd's.

It is an HP cd-writer dvd combo 9900 series.

Also, when I try to install the new version of the
burning software, the install stalls about 1/3 way
through. I did this because I could no long burn a cd
for whatever reason. It kept telling me to put a cd rom
in and I tried several new ones but to no avail.

So that when I went to the Windows update but after
downloading the update, it simply REFUSES to begin the
install at all.

BUT..back to the window update problem...

I have read over the faq's for the link you provided and
NONE of them describes what to do when the download works
great but the install NEVER STARTS.

Thanks for your help! I'm about to lose it.

link to a patch that often resolves this problem

As to the WindowsUpdate problem, please post back with the error codes
listed in the log file I mentioned previously.

Hey Rick,

Thanks for your help. OK, the cd-rom problems are fixed.

I have reviewed the log file and I do not see any errors.

The log file contains "Success" a lot. Again, the
download works great but the Install Progress bar goes
absolutely nowhere regardless of how long I leave it up.

Here is some of what the bottom of the log file contains

Hi,

Ok, let's reinstall the site controls. To reinstall the Windows Update site
controls, you must first remove the old controls. The following are generic
steps for all versions of Windows, so not all may apply to your system:

Remove Controls:
1. Click on Start, then Run.
2. Type in 'regsvr32 iuctl.dll /u' (without the quotes) click OK. You should
get a successful message, click OK on that as well.
3. Click on Start/search/files, choose to look in C:\ (or whatever is your
system drive letter)
4. Type in the file name IUCTL.DLL and click Search Now. Delete every copy
of this file that you find.
5. Run the search again for the file IUENGINE.DLL. Again, delete every copy
of this file you find.

Delete Windows Update files:
1. Double-click on My Computer.
2. Open the C drive
3. Open the Program Files folder
4. Open the Windows Update folder.
5. Delete everything in the folder except the V4 folder.
6. Next, Open the V4 folder, if it exists.
7. Delete everything in the folder except the iuhist.xml file
8. Close Window

Then revisit the WindowsUpdate site and you will be prompted to reinstall
the V4 site controls.

Hey Rick,

I followed your directions exactly, but nothing has
changed. I do have a V4 folder and deleted everything
except the ihuhist.xml file.

When I went back to the Windows Update site, I was NOT
prompted to reinstall the V4 site controls.

I did not restart the computer first, so I will try that
and see if it makes any difference.

Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
