With my Win98SE laptop & the latest IE6 browser, whenever I visit
Amazon.com's website & click "look inside this book", the next page starts
to load, but then my mouse & the rest of my computer completely freezes (the
book's "page" never loads). A few seconds after that, my computer restarts.

I reinstalled IE6 yesterday, but I still have the same problem.

Can anyone tell me what in blazes is going on, and how to fix this?

I use that feature all the time on my Sony Vaio Laptop which only has 256 MB
of RAM and the Read Book thing works fine, I just went to try it and no
problem, this time of year it is slow. Also are you a Amazon member ? Due to
the copywriters laws to view a book you have to have an account (no charge
for it) maybe its getting stuck going to that page ? Even if you do have a
regular account (It will say "Welcome Bill") on login if you do, for the
book reading, you do have to give them a credit card number for their
records, this seems to be a fairly new thing.
My guess is maybe super heavy traffic on their site or you do not have
enough memory. I am running WIN98SE and the same version IE you have.

I've got a PIII/650 and 320M of RAM. I've also got an Amazon.com account.

But even if this wasn't so, that's still no excuse for the computer to lock
up. Slow in loading the page, yes, but not locking up.

Bill,
Well you sound like you have all you need for Amazon, I have heard of some
people locking up, but they were mainly the ones with 64 or sometimes 128 MB
RAM, you have more then enough memory and CPU speed.

So as far as the PC locking up, I agree with you totally. Ok to be slow, but
sure should not effect your system ! Have you looked at the Program Manager
(CTL-ALT-DEL) and seen anything that is not responding ? My lockups happen
mainly when "Trayclnt" is not responding (A MSN program)

All I can say is ask Amazon, they are not the fastest on getting back to
technical questions as their web staff is small, but they usually are pretty
good at figuring out weird things like what is happening to you.
Sorry I do not have anything really useful to say !

I had the same problem - computer would freeze, then reboot. Ugly. It went
away when I removed Norton Personal Firewall.
