Why does the second screen in PowerPoint not advance?

When using PPT 2003 and my laptop with a projector I set the projector as my
second display(desktop). When I advance the slides in slide show mode. why
do some presentation advance along on the laptop monitor and others do not?
Does it have anything to do with the version of PPT that was used to create
the presentation?

Is the computer setup to mirror (same image on both screens) or as an
extended desktop (Presentation in show mode on one screen and edit view on
the other)?

If running an extended desktop, if you click on the edit view the
presentation looses sync with the actual advancing presentation.
