Why does Outlook 2003 hang during send/recieve on pop3 emails?

When I hit the send/recieve button outlook 2003 starts to recieve a couple
emails and then just freezes up. I could still send emails I just can't
download them from my pop3 email. What should I do?

The first thing to try is to disable scanning mail with an anti-virus
scanner.

I tried disabling the email scan but It still hangs.

Depending on the AV program, you may have to uninstall it completely and
reinstall it without the mail scanning option.
