why does my cursor jump to another part of the page whilst typing

I am typing up an urgent, long report. Too often, I look up and see that the
cursor has jumped to another part of the page and the typing has carried on
elsewhere. This is driving me mad and my report is taking me twice as long
to type up.

The only time this happens to me is when I forget to disable the touch pad on
the lap top before I start typing... could this be your problem? Anything
hitting that can make your insertion point jump... sometimes I think all it
takes is a shadow! :)

Many thanks JoAnn, yes it is a laptop and I will try this tonight.

Are you working on a laptop? If so, you might be brushing the touchpad with
your wrist or a sleeve.

This issue comes up a lot. It's so easy to touch the touchpad and never
realize it. They should build a little cover into the case so that one can
hide it if desired. (Personally I dislike touchpads. Give me a mouse and I'm
a happy camper. Just like my cats. ;-) )

Either that, or make better touchpads. <g>

I've *never* had this "tap/type" problem on a Mac touchpad. I've only seen
it on Wintel machines.

I'm no Mac bigot but I'd been successfully using a Mac Powerbook for several
years when I "met" my first touchpad on a Wintel PC and immediately disabled
it. The Mac just gets the ergonomics right.

I just don't like touchpads. It seems that I tend to hold my hands in weird
positions and then my hands start to hurt whenever I am forced to use a
touchpad.

I wouldn't want to use one for any extended period or for detailed
graphics/layout, but in a pinch (i.e. on a plane) I far prefer touchpads to
those joystick doodads.

I'm just thankful that Dell's drivers let you auto-disable the touchpad when
an external mouse is plugged in.
