why does my clock stop during the screen saver?

this is just a best guess but the clock is basically, for lack of a better
word, a variable notifier. Much like the computer will drop frames with
video to keep itself running, if the demands of the screen saver divert the
comp from managing the clock, it will get back to it when its through cause
it considers it a lower priority.

my clock also does not keep time when the computer is off.

That is almost invariably a sign that you need to replace the battery on the
motherboard.

that's what i was thinking. but i really don't want to. i know it's easy. i
just don't want to open it up. i'll probably screw something up. so i'm
guessing its not worth it.

what other thing does that battery control besides the clock?

It maintains all of the BIOS settings.

As you say, it's easy, but if you don't feel comfortable opening the case
and changing the battery yourself, you have two other choices: find a more
experienced friend to help, or take it to a professional to do it.

just wanted to follow up and say i windows updated last night and my clock is
fine now. yey! i did custom update and saw there was updates for clocks.
