clock stops during screen saver

last week i had a power surge. everything seems to be fine except for the
clock.

it stops keeping time when the screen saver is on.

it does not keep time when the computer is off.

do i need to change the battery? is that hard to do?

i've tried these steps. didn't work:
Open a command prompt window (Start | Run | cmd) and enter the following
commands:

net stop w32time
w32tm /unregister
w32tm /register
net start w32time

why would the power surge only kill the clock and nothing else?

That's a symptom that the battery has nothing to do with the problem.

it does not keep time when the computer is off.

That's a symptom that it *is* the battery.

Since you have contradictory symptoms, and since a new battery is very cheap
and it's easy to change, if I were in your shoes, I'd probably give it a
try. I'm not optimistic that it will fix it, though. I can't explain the
contradictory symptoms

I have no idea, which is one of the reasons I'm not confident that changing
the battery will help.

I doubt it, but since I don't know what's causing your problem, if I were
you I'd wait for someone who might know more about this than I to join the
thread and offer more help.
