Why Does FP 2002/XP Create Duplicates of Photos and HTM fies in Same Web?

I'm curious to know why it is that I always wind up with multiple copies of
the
same photos on my web. Perhaps the way I work with FP could be improved.

Anytime I need anything added to my web, I copy the folders & files into my
web using Windows Explorer. Then I run FP import. I go about it this way
in hopes of maintaining some kind of intelligent and orderly structure
inside the web folder, rather than just letting FP dump a hodge-podge of
files into the same large or high-level web folder. However, after the
import process, copies of photos that were in a low-level folder that I
copied into the web folder turn up in the Images folder that FP
automatically created when I opened the new web, and yet another set of
photos show up in the web folder, outside all the sub-folders.

I would very greatly appreciate suggestions as to how I might 1). figure out
which set of files is the imported set, and 2). use FP in such a way that
only one set of all imported files wind up in the high-level web folder,
with no other copies of those files anywhere in the web folder.

The key phrase here is : " I copy the folders & files into my web using Windows Explorer. Then I
run FP import. "

That is your problem. Do **Not** copy them in with Windows Explorer because then FrontPage does not
know they are there.

Either:
1. copy and paste or drag and drop in FrontPage folder view
2. or import them with FrontPage.

Its because you're doing it twice.

Don't copy them into FP with Windows Explorer...ever.

Just Import them into FP from within FP..if you select the Images folder first then Import them they will end up in the Images folder.

If you copy the files and folders into the web with Windows Explorer, then
you are duplicating the process by also using the "import" function. All you
need to do is use Windows Explorer to put them where you want in the web, at
least for photos. You can do the same for html files, but in some cases you
might want to drag them onto an open page or paste them in. However you do
it, though, just do it once.

Thanks, Steve! I sincerely appreciate your feedback.

Question: If can I use FP to import an entire folder containing sub-folders
and files, and in doing so, does FP maintain the same folder, sub-folder and
file structure as the source folder?

Thanks, again, Rob! I appreciate your help.

Do all images used in FP have to reside in the Images folder? Or can they
reside in other folders/sub-folders and not have duplicates anywhere in the
web?

Yes it does.

At least it "should."

Hi, again, Steve!

And thanks for your valued response. You're right! FP does maintain the
structure when you import a folder.

No, the can be anywhere...but for sanity's-sake you wanna keep them organized somewhere. I even use sub-folders under Images folder...design elements, gallery stuff, etc.
