Why does auto complete pick up deleted and unused addresses?

Why is it that deleted contacts and old addresses that have not been used
for a considerable length of time come up in the autocomplete, sometimes
instead of a newer more frequently used address for the contact?

How do I get rid of these old addresses if I have removed them from contacts
and distribution lists?
 
autocomplete is a history of addresses you've sent to. use the arrow key to
select incorrect addresses and press the Del key.
