Why does a PPS become a file after "save?"

G

Guest

Usually, when I save a PPS received via e-mail to my computer, I get a PPS.

This time it is a file i.e. under properties, file type is file; no longer a
PPT show.

Does anyone know what caused this?

I created the PPS and sent it to myself via e-mail.

What type of file did it become? I'm assuming that the extension now reads
..PPT which is the same thing, the difference being on how it opens if you
have the full version of PowerPoint on your system. I have heard of this
happening recently, but do not recall the reason behind it

Michael,

It is the type of file that has to look for a program to open it. However,
when I double click on the icon, it opens as a PPT. But, I really want PPS.
How can I get around this? Any settings I can change? I have tried to save
many PPT files to PPS then send the PPS to myself via e-mail. When I save
the PPS to my computer, they are all files (not PPT or PPS).

The strange thing is when I forwarded a PPS file (received from another
source quite a while ago) to myself just now, it is still a PPS file when I
saved it.

I am lost and I would like to reset.

Please help.

Thanks.

Michael,

I used "search" and under type it says "file" instead of "Microsoft
PowerPoint Presentation" or "Microsoft PowerPoint Slide Show." I haven't
done anything to PPT nor my system.

There is no difference between .pps and .ppt other than the way they open
using PowerPoint the full version. In the viewer they open in the slideshow
mode as they have no choice <g> sounds like your running with your file
extensions turned off, which can be a PITA. If you want to turn the
extensions on, go to your control panel and select Folder Options, in that
window select the View tab and remove the checkmark from "Hide extensions
for know files" and click Apply. then when you look at your files in
Explorer, you will see really what it is.

Go to windows explorer >tools > folder options > view and untick "hide
extensions for known file types"

What extension is showing on the file in question?

Hi,

Do you want to read the good news or bad news first?

Bad news??

I unchecked the box as instructed and clicked okay, rebooted the PC,
rechecked and it was still unchecked.
Then I used "search" plus right-clicked on the file to check properties.
Either way no change, file type was still showing file etc. What else
should I reset? Do I have another problem?

Good news

I sent myself the same PPS file via e-mail. This time I didn't save right
away. I opened it first, closed PPT and then I saved it to my PC. Hurray!
This time I got PPS. It seems to be okay now. I hope so. I check
properties and file type is showing slide show etc., still no extension.

So, I guess we can move from the original question to the new question - how
do I show file extensions or am I using the wrong feature to check
extension. I hope this one is easier.

Sorry, guys, I wonder why I have so many questions too. Will work hard on
giving everybody including myself a break shortly.

Appreciate advice.

When you went to the Control Panel, Folder Options, and after you removed
the checkmark, did you go to the bottom of the window and click on Apply? No
need to reboot your system after you make the change. What program are you
using to look at your files on your system?

Michael,

Sorry to bother you. I think everything is okay. I did uncheck that box.
The problem was I didn't open my eyes wide enough. I looked at file type
instead of the file name. FYI, previously when I got the file icon instead
of the pps or ppt icon, those files were either .ppt or .pps.

My problem was the icon (file) and hidden extension didn't tell me anything.
Now, I have both the proper icon and the extension. If in the futre, the
proper icon doesn't show, I can still tell from the file extension.

I could not find "folder options" via Internet Explorer. So, I'll go to
Control Panel.

I still don't know what caused the icon change in the first place but I
don't really care. I am a happy camper now.

Thank you for going out of your way to help me. I appreciate it.

"I could not find "folder options" via Internet Explorer." Most the time you
can't find anything in Internet Explorer. File extensions are a system thing
and can be found like I said in the Control Panel, under Folder Options or
Windows Explorer and again under folder Options.

I could not find "folder options" via Internet Explorer. So, I'll go to
Control Panel.

For future reference ...

That should be Windows Explorer, not Internet Explorer.

In Windows Explorer (press Windows Key, E as a shortcut to get there) choose
Tools, Folder Options.

Thanks, Steve. You really understand me. Although John said WINDOWS
Explorer, I didn't see the word WINDOWS and went to Internet Explorer.

Then when everything was resolved, Michael said Windows Explorer. This time
I saw the word Windows and I knew what I did wrong.

I promise I'll open my eyes wider from now on. I am usually detailed but
when I am preoccupied with a "problem," I may not see clearly.

Thank you all for your support and teaching me Windows stuff. You know I
really like shortcuts.

I do the same thing, so I notice it when somebody else does, I suppose. <g>

That same Windows key has all kinds of interesting uses ...

E for Explorer (the Windows one, and it's all Microsoft's fault for giving them
similar names, anyhow).

F for the Find feature.

D for instant access to the desktop (the Windows one again, not the wooden one
<g>). D again to return to whatever you had open before.

L for (oops, almost lost the message doing this ...) Log Off Now.

M for Minimize all apps

R for Run Program

U for accessibility Utility manager

I'll save the rest for you to try. Quiz in the morning. <g>

And B does something but I can't quite figure out what.

Thanks a lot, Steve. I'll work on the Windows key.

One time someone said the word "window/windows," I wasn't sure if it was the
kind that one could see through and some maids won't do......

Yes, Microsoft does a good job in confusing us, at least me, with
names/terms. Do you remember my very first post? You were the one who
responded to it. You were my very first MVP contact. Congratulations!

I think you are right that they have wedded to the term. Do you know which
term I am talking about?

No, I'm not sure. But that very fact argues in favor of term limits. <g>

So, Epinn, I think all of the other MVP's have designated Steve as
your own Official MVP Contact.

Just kidding, we don't have terms or assignments like that. In fact,
we don't have assignments. We just try to help.

Which I'm sure is a great relief to Epinn.

Imagine going through life with me attached to your ankle. <g>

Steve,

You told me about the shortcuts (Windows key + a letter) ...... I am
inspired to rediscover Windows all over. Today, I added the PPT icon to
quick launch. Echo and I believe that I am officially hooked, so I might as
well ...... I also found out about the grey area of a scroll box.

I thought it was the other way round ...... the student following the
teacher, trying to learn a few tricks here and there on top of the main
issues.

It's good to discover, rediscover .......

Cheers,

What do you think, Echo. Should we tell Epinn about Windows-wide shortcut
keys?

<g>

Did you know that you can set up keystroke combos that launch programs 'n such
from anywhere in Windows? Rightclick a shortcut, choose Properties, pick the
Shortcut tab, click in the Shortcut Key text box and type a keyboard combo ...
choose combos that none of your apps use or it won't work. Ctrl+Alt+Letter
generally works well. Ctl+Alt+P on most of my computers fires off PPT. Very
handy.

Thank you, Professor Steve. Now, I can get my "fix" more easily, if you
know what I mean. ;>) Promise me you will throw me a rope, if I am deep
down in the black hole.

This trick reminds me of the Macros in Words.

After I keyed in my shortcut key, the cursor flashed in the box beside
"Start in." I have no idea what that was and I left it blank. Anyway, it
works. ;-O
