Why do Windows XP change my data files to Read Only?

When I transfer my data files from my old computer windows 98 to a new
computer with windows XP system. Windows XP change my files to a Read Only
files and will not let copy, move and delete or update my data. This is not a
program but my data>

How did you transfer the files?
If you burned them to a CD-ROM on the Win 98 machine then copied them to
your new PC, they will, be default, be "read only". That is how ROM (Read
Only Memory) works.

Og Yes I copied to a CD drive. How do I fix this. I try the computer to
Computer transfer but was unable to make is work. The new WindowXP did not
find the connection to the Win 98

Copy the files from the CD to your new hard drive.
Select the files on your new hard drive and remove the "Read Only" check
mark.

Copy them to one folder, press Ctrl/A to select all, right-click one of
them, click Properties, and deselect the "Read Only" attribute. This
will remove "Read Only" from all at once.
