kurttrail, I guess you have a b*tch following you around like a lost
puppy whether you like it or not.

Yeah. And this thread is really stupid, since I don't have a real
opinion one way or the other whether the CD or the disk partition is
more expensive for the OEM.

NOT robots. This important work is performed by CD farmers who wear black
overalls and pointy little tin-foil hats. This can be verified at the
unimpeachable source, Wikipedia:

Obviously, tin-foil hats are not just for paranoids and lunatics anymore;
they come in a wide variety of styles (but only ONE color):

Even the military has learned the value of tin-foil hats:

Soon you will be wearing one too:

And where does one find tin foil? Most of the foil in my area is made
out of aluminum.

I recently purchased a Dell laptop,

I paid the extra for Windows XP Professional because I am a software
developer and I require it for apps such as .net.

As a software developer one should own/buy a real MS OS CD.

They will send one if you make enough noise. Be aware though it is
most likely going to cost you. On my laptop it cost me like $26 from
Dell for the CD pack. Included the XP CD as well as all the drivers,
apps etc that came pre-loaded on the machine. (3 CDs in all)

They tried to tell me I had no need for one. But I told them I did
need one because if for some reason the hard drive failed then I would
have no way to reload my laptop.

The invoice total for my three CDs was around $28.45. That said, because
my computer was still under warranty (limited hardware warranty because
as a matter of principle, I don't buy service contracts), I was not
charged for these disks.

I did not call, I emailed. I explained in the email that I was entitled
to the disks and that I wanted them sent soonest. I had a reply within
24 hours and the disks arrived within 2 business days.

The post you're looking for is the fifth one down.

I have come to the tentative conclusion that Dell is very customer
service oriented, if only one knows how to ask properly.
