Why do my watermarks appear broken in Word?

MS Word:
Transparent watermarks appear broken and are displayed above the text,
making it difficult to read or edit the documents. If the page is scrolled up
and down, the problem occasionally resolves itself. Also, if a smaller window
(i.e. Sametime chat) is moved around the affected area, the problem goes away
until I scroll again.
Similar issues occur with embedded Visio flowcharts and other images (JPEG
and GIF, I don't think BMP has that issue). Visio flowcharts and other images
appear broken, some lines do not appear at all, while others seem misplaced.
Again, problem is mitigated by the steps described above.

Visio:
Flowcharts that used to have bold lines appear thinner. Shapes are out of
place or do not display at all. Problem is occasionally fixed by scrolling.

From the Format > Background > text watermark dialog, uncheck the 'semi
transparent' box.
The Visio problem is off topic for this forum, but is probably a screen
driver issue. Update the display driver and or reduce its hardware
acceleration.
