Why do my pages keep changing when I do not touch the mouse?

I am using my Dell laptop Inspiron 8600 and the XP Professional OS was
reinstalled. I have only been using the mouse in the keyboard for navigating.
Most everything is working as well or better than before except for the
following situation:

I will be at any page, even this community forum, and for unknown reasons
the page changes to one I never asked for or clicked on. Sometimes this
happens - I move the cursor rapidly aross the screen and the page changes
instantly. Other times - I just hover the cursor over a link, and in 30
secords or so the page turns to the screen for that link. (I hope my
vocabulary is correct) Naturally, I am then at some unknown page that I do
not want and have to try and get back to the original, usually after some
difficult maneuvering.

Is there a control for this? I read this answer to another question (below)
and it SEEMS close to my problem. I doubt if the driver is a problem, but how
would I know?. As far as I know, there are no special controls for this. How
would I find out?

ANSWER TO ANOTHER QUESTION: <<<That in turn suggests that the problem might
be caused by your mouse driver or an option that you are using with it.
E.g. sometimes there is available an option, called "snap-to", which causes
the mouse pointer to always automatically go to the default button in a
dialog.
Perhaps yours has a faulty implementation of such a feature? If you find one
and it is enabled, try disabling >>>

Thank you I would appreciate advise.

The first thing I would try is a different mouse. I had the same thing
happen to me a few years ago, and I've never seen so many windows open at
once.

OK, Thanks, I better do that, but the mouse is the one built right into the
laptop keyboard. Knowing this laptop, I would not doubt that it could go bad.
Everything else has. :)

I have a lot of problems with static when using the built-in touch pad in a Sony Viao. Not so bad on a damp day, but
ridiculous during dry, hot days. The cursor flys all over the place, in fact at times it's hard to find it! Try an
external mouse, I've had no problems with them.

Thanks for the answers. I still have problems with this issue. Using an
external mouse has not helped and I am using one that has been used for three
years on this PC. Then I decided to use the one in the laptop. Anyway, I did
try the mouse connected by USB.

Now, however, I see the problem with moving the cursor OVER any link and
giving it a second there. Boom! the link is activated and I am off in some
place where I did not want to be.

This does seem to be somehow related to the mouse software or driver.
