why do I need to sign in to send email

This was strange....I tried to send a post to the group... and it said I had
to sign in (live messenger) .. why would I need to be signed into my
microsoft acct in order to send anything from windows mail?

There should be no connection between the two programs, unless
you are running Windows Live Mail instead of Windows Mail.
However, your header says Windows Mail. We would need a detailed
description of the steps you took and the exact prompts you saw.

I've experienced the same thing. I don't have messenger installed at all
(Vista Ultimate 64bit). I don't get any message and if I try to post a
message it appears to work but never show up in the group. However if I sign
in the post does appear. I am using windows mail - not windows live mail.

You say "If I sign in" - sign in where?
There are two settings that may keep you from seeing your posts.
Go to Tools, Options, Read, uncheck "Get 300 headers at a time".
On the General tab, uncheck "Use newsgroup message rating
features". Microsoft has acknowledged that there is a bug in the
Communities features that may prevent messages posted under
that feature from appearing.

thanks Gary,

I've unchecked the rating feature - think that was the source of the
problem. There was a sign in button under the rate this post button - that
is what I was talking about. My post wouldn't show in the group unless I
signed in with that button. It disappeared when the ratings options was
unchecked. Thanks for your help.
