Why do I have to double click on the equation to see the fonts correctly?
After exporting a file from OpenOffice to word, most of it works correctly.
However, I need to double click on EACH equation to see the equations
correctly. Otherwise it just shows graphic garbage.

The equation format in OpenOffice (Oo) is different from the equation format
in Word. Since both apps support OLE (object linking & embedding), Word
recognizes the fact that the equations were created in Oo. Double-clicking
the equation opens up the equation in Oo for editing. I didn't have any luck
with doing that, because when I double-clicked an equation and it opened in
Oo, when I closed Oo the equation was no longer readable in Word. At least
before I double-clicked it, it looked somewhat normal.

I had the most success when I had the document open in Oo and saved it (not
"exported" as you wrote) as a Word 95 file. When I did that, the equations
looked perfect in Word. Problem is, they were still unreadable if I
double-clicked any of them as above.

Thanks Bob, but it seems that you assume that I am using Oo in windows too.
My Oo is not installed in windows but in Fedora Core 4 (Linux). So, Word
does not know that the equation is a Oo OLE. In fact, I am able to edit the
equation in word, so the format is fine, the format is properly understood by
word. The only problem is that I have to open and close the Math OLE in Word
in order to have the fonts display correctly.

You're right; that's what I assumed. When you say "the Math OLE" in Word,
what do you mean? More specifically, does a toolbar pop up that says
"Equation"? When you single-click an equation in Word, what's the status bar
message?

One more question -- what version of Word are you using?

Yes, the Equation tool bar appears when I double click on the object. In
other words "Microsoft Equation 3" is able to open and edit the equation.
When I close it, the fonts look ok, and the equation is perfectly readable.
I am using word 2003,

Wow, I find that totally interesting. Believable, but interesting because if
I create a document in Oo for Windows, the equations are only marginally
readable in Word. Double-clicking an equation opens it up in Oo, not in
"Microsoft Equation 3" like it does when you do it. The status bar message
further confirms the OLE link is to Oo. I'm assuming yours behaves
differently because yours was created originally in Linux.

Would you mind sending me an OpenOffice sample document privately -- perhaps
one saved in the native Oo format, and one saved as a .doc file. I'd like to
explore this a bit further. I have an idea of something that may help.

There is an option in Oo to save in MS Word compatible. I am using that. Go
to Tools Options Save, or something like that.

Yeah, that's what I'm doing. There are actually 2 different options there
for Word docs (95 format and 97/2000 format), but when using the Windows
version of Oo, neither of these options produce equations that can be opened
in Microsoft Equation Editor.

I'd still like to get a sample document from you that you created on Linux.
Like I said in my earlier post, I have what I think will be a solution, but
I need to test it.
