Why do I have over a million lines on my spreadsheet?

I've received a spreadsheet from Europe that I made some changes to. Now
whenever I open a new spreadsheet it has 1,048,576 lines and columns to XFD.
Needless to say it is greatly slowing down my PC. How do I get back to
normal?

That's standard with EXCEL 2007. You shouldn't notice any degradation in
performance.

Open the file and press F12 which will get you the Save As dialog box and in
Save as type>>Select “Excel 97-2003 Workbook†and save it in your desired
location with file name. Now open the file it will show 65,536 rows and 256
Columns only, since it has been converted to Excel 97-2003 version.

That's why I have made my statement with the word "ONLY".
"Now open the file it will show 65,536 rows and 256 Columns only"

At the same time when looking the OP's requirement (whenever I open a new
spreadsheet it has 1,048,576 lines and columns to XFD) I beleive that there
is no other option to decrease the 10,48,576 rows and 16384 columns to 65536
and 256 in Excel 2007 or 2010 apart from converting it as Excel 97-2003
version.

It would be lost. However, when you use Save As to save an Excel 2007
workbook in an earlier format, the Compatibility Checker will pop up with a
'significant loss of functionality' warning. It tells you there is data
outside the row & column limits of the selected format, and that data will be
lost.
