Why do hyperlinks open in multiple Internet Explorer windows?

In Outlook 2003 email messages with multiple hyperlinks, clicking on each
hyperlink opens a separate Internet Explorer window. This did not happen in
the previous version of Outlook I was using.

These are true statements. Do you have a question here?

due to complaints about reusing windows, they changed the behavior in
Outlook 2003. Do you have the latest updates installed and how is it
configured in IE?

My question is why is it happening and how do I stop it. It is very annoying
as I end up with too many copies of Internet Explorer open and I need to keep
closing them.

If you know how to turn this off, please let me know. In Internet Explorer I
do not have it set up to open links in separate windows. If I want a separate
window, I right click and select it in the menu.

I just installed Office 2003 and I went through all of the updates on the
Microsoft Office site that it recommended. I will check again to make sure.

In Internet Explorer I have it set to NOT open links in separate windows. If
I want a link in a separate window, I right click it and select it from the
menu.

Is there a way to turn off this behaviour in Outlook?

Nope. Microsoft in its infinite wisdom always pits one segment of their user
base against another. They believe that someone must lose in order for
someone else to win, rather than supplying an option so people can choose
what they prefer and have eneryone win.
