Why can't I write on the excel sheet?

I can only view it, but not being able to write anything on it. I have
windows XP professional; I have also installed the window office 2003
pack which seems to include excel. What program do I need? Am I doing
something wrong?

Is it possible the sheet is 'protected'? Open the file, on the mai
menu at the top of the sheet, click on Tools>Protection. Is "Unprotec
Sheet" an option in the displayed dropdown? If so, click on that.

Does this happen only to one file or every file?

Does this happen on every workbook that you open--or just a certain one?

If it only happens on one workbook, maybe the originator of that workbook
protected the worksheets in that workbook to stop anyone from making changes.
 
I unchecked the protection and I can write things on it now. Thank you
