Why can't I update my bibliography? (Word 2000 and 2003)

I click at the left of Bibliography and press F9 (as written in Help menu),
but it doesn't work. What is my mistake?

You talking about pressing F9 gives me the idea that you are talking about a
field. However, the bibliography field has only been introduced in Word
2007. So if you are using Word 2000 or 2003, then you must be talking about
something else or a different field from the bibliography field. Could you
clarify your question a bit more?
