Why can't I update critical updates on Windows xp Home edition

I have always been able to update critical updates untill recently.
I have an emachine with windows xp and it recommended updating a driver(I do not now remember what the driver was for). Windows warned me not to install the driver, however I did it anyway. Ever since, when I download critical updates from MSN some of them will not install. but others will not. I do not know whether the driver is at fault, however, the problem has existed since installing the driver.

Go to that driver's control panel and revert to a previous version.
Failing that, do a system restore to a date prior to this change.

Lesson: don't install driver updates unless you know you are actually
fixing a problem. And then, do it from the vendor-supplied software.

Hope this is useful to you. Let us know.
