Why can't I send to certain recipients (550 authentication)?

I keep getting a 550 authentication error when trying to send to new people.
How do I authenticate them or turn it off?
 
Are you sure you have authenticated to your outgoing mail server? Check your
profile to see if it's set up to authenticate for outgoing mail.
